The central government has taken a big step to control the prices of food items and curb inflation. On Thursday, the government announced that the Food Corporation of India (FCI) will sell 25 lakh tonnes of wheat to bulk consumers by March 2025. This sale will be done under the Open Market Sales Scheme (OMSS), which is an important scheme implemented by the government to control the prices of food items.
FCI wheat sale campaign
FCI, which works under the Indian government, will control this massive distribution of wheat. This scheme has been created by the government to keep wheat prices stable and increase the availability of wheat among consumers. Under this, this wheat will be sold through e-auction to flour mills, manufacturers of wheat products, and end users.
Reserve Price and Quality Standards
A statement issued by the Food Ministry said that a reserve price of wheat has been fixed for this sale. The price of wheat sold by FCI has been fixed at Rs 2,325 per quintal (average quality) and Rs 2,300 per quintal low-qualityy wheat). This will ensure that the government maintains control over wheat prices and that consumers can get wheat at a reasonable price.
Previous record of wheat sales
Last year, FCI sold 10 lakh tonnes of wheat under the Open Market Sales Scheme, and this time the government has increased its quantity to 25 lakh tonnes. This step has been taken by the government to control rising inflation and ensure the availability of wheat.
Stability in the market due to active steps
According to the Food Ministry, the objective of the OMSS scheme is to regulate the supply of wheat and bring price stability to the market. This scheme will prevent unnecessary increasess in the market and consumers will get wheat at cheaper rates.
The government has not yet disclosed the date of commencement of this sale, but through this, flour mills and manufacturers of wheat products will definitely benefit. A target has been set to complete this sale process by 31 March 2025.
It is worth noting that the wheat sale scheme by the government is an important step to control inflation and provide relief to consumers. FCI's sale scheme will not only increase the availability of wheat, but through this, it will also help in maintaining balance and stability in the market.
