If you like to wear saree daily then you need to be careful. Doctors from Bihar and Maharashtra have issued a warning saying that wearing tight petticoat with saree can cause skin cancer.

Doctors from Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College, Wardha and Madhubani Medical College and Hospital, Bihar, after treating two women suffering from cancer, warned that the tightly tied underskirt (petticoat) traditionally worn under the sari in rural areas of India causes constant friction, which can cause inflammation of the skin. Sometimes this can lead to blisters and in some cases skin cancer.

  • What is 'petticoat cancer'?

It was earlier referred to as "sari cancer", but doctors, in a study published in BMJ Case Reports, said that the tightness of the waist cord was responsible for it and hence it was named 'petticoat cancer'.

In the first case, a 70-year-old woman sought medical help as she had a painful skin ulcer on her right side that was not healing for 18 months. The surrounding skin had also lost its colour. The woman had been wearing a sari since childhood.

  • Wounds can develop from –

Doctors did a biopsy on the woman, after which it was found that the woman had Marjolin ulcer, which is also called squamous cell carcinoma (ulcerated skin cancer). Doctors said that Marjolin ulcer is usually less common. But it is very dangerous.

It can develop in old burns, non-healing wounds, leg ulcers, tuberculosis skin tumors and wounds caused by vaccination and snake bites. However, it is still not known how ulcers or wounds become fatal, doctors said.

He said, “Due to constant pressure on the waist, the skin often becomes weak, which can lead to the formation of wounds or ulcers. Experts said that these ulcers often do not heal completely due to constant pressure caused by tight clothes. A chronic wound is formed, which can be dangerous in the future.

Health experts recommend wearing a loose petticoat under the sari to reduce pressure on the skin, and wearing loose clothing to allow the area to heal if skin problems develop.
