Tulsi Gabbard, often mistaken for an Indian because of her first name, has no connection to India. Gabbard's mother converted to Hinduism and gave all her children Hindu names. Tulsi Gabbard also considers herself a Hindu and was the first Hindu US Congress member. Tulsi took the oath of office with her hand on the Bhagavad Gita.

Tulsi was previously in the Democratic Party. In 2020, Gabbard claimed for the Democratic presidential nomination against Kamala Harris. She later dropped out of the race and eventually left the party in 2022. After joining the Republican Party in 2022, Gabbard supported Donald Trump for president and helped him prepare for the debate against Kamala Harris.

Gabbard is married to cinematographer Abraham Williams. Her father Mike Gabbard is a state senator who was previously elected as a Republican but switched parties to become a Democrat.
