The problem of L4/L5 slip discs in the spine has become very common these days. This problem occurs when the disc (jelly) between the two beads (vertebrae) of the spine L4 and L5 slips out of its place and this puts pressure on the nerves. Dr. Arun Bhanot (Director - Spine Surgery, CK Birla Hospital Gurugram) said that the main reason for this can be our lifestyle, sitting too much, lifting heavy weights, and not keeping the correct posture of the body.
Dr. Arun Bhanot explains the symptoms of L4/L5 slip disc-
- 1. Back pain- The most common symptom of L4/L5 slip disc is severe back pain. This pain is often persistent and may worsen while walking, bending,g or doing any work.
- 2. Pain and tingling in the legs – Slip disc causes pressure on the nerves, which can cause pain from the waist to the legs. This pain usually occurs in one leg and can also be accompanied by tingling and numbness.
- 3. Feeling weak- In this problem, weakness can be felt in the leg muscles, especially in the toe and the front part of the foot. This can cause discomfort while walking and difficulty in maintaining balance.
- 4. Lack of control over urination – In some cases, people may feel l lack of control over urination or defecation. If this happens, a doctor should be contacted immediately, as this may be a sign of a serious problem.
Treatment-
- Pain relieving medicines: To reduce the pain, the doctor can give some medicines, which help in reducing the effect of pressure on the nerves.
- Physiotherapy – Physiotherapy can improve the body's condition. Stretching exercises and postural correction are recommended so that the muscles are strengthened and the pressure on the spinal cord is reduced.
- Rest and correct posture- It is very important to rest and sit properly. Wrong posture can worsen the problem.
- Surgery – If medicines and physiotherapy do not provide relief, the doctor may suggest surgery. In surgery, the part of the slipped disc is removed.
Methods of prevention-
- Do not lift weights, do not make a habit of sitting bent
- Do light stretching and exercise daily.
- Avoid sitting in one place for a long time.
- Take care of the right chair and postur.e
