Kolkata Murder Case Update: There was a lot of uproar in West Bengal on Tuesday over the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata. During the efforts of the protesters to reach the state secretariat 'Nabanna' to protest against this incident, there were clashes with the police at many places on Tuesday afternoon and large-scale violence took place on the streets of Kolkata and Howrah.

Regarding this matter, the BJP has also announced a Bengal bandh on Wednesday. However, the Mamata government of Bengal has given clear instructions that there will be no bandh, and all the employees have been instructed to come to the office. Updates related to Kolkata murder case-

  • Violence broke out for nearly four hours during the Nabanna march in Kolkata, in which several people from both sides were injured, including senior police officers and women protesters. Police said more than 200 people have been arrested across the state.
  • Protesters pelted stones and glass bottles at police at several places where they (protesters) were prevented from proceeding. Police said 15 Kolkata Police personnel and 14 state police personnel were injured in the clashes.
  • The police resorted to massive lathi-charge, water cannon, and tear gas shells to disperse the violent mob. BJP leader Shubhendu Adhikari claimed that more than 160 protesters, including 17 women, were injured in the police action.
  • Condemning the police action on the protesters, BJP's Bengal unit president Sukanta Majumdar has called for a 12-hour 'Bengal bandh' on Wednesday. Leader of Opposition in the Assembly Shubhendu Adhikari urged Governor C.V. Anand Bose to impose President's rule in the state.
  • The 'Nabanna Abhiyan' was called separately by unregistered student organizations Paschim Banga Chhatra Samaj and Sangrami Joutha Manch. They demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The incident took place on August 9.
  • The Trinamool Congress government has urged people not to support the BJP's 6 am to 6 pm general strike. Chief Minister Banerjee's chief advisor Alapan Bandopadhyay said, "The government will not allow any shutdown on Wednesday. We urge people not to participate in it. Every step will be taken to ensure that public life is not affected."
  • Soon after, the state government issued a notification stating that all government offices would remain open and all employees, barring those in emergencies or on leave, must report for duty on August 28 or face a show-cause notice for unauthorized absence.
  • Meanwhile, the father of the victim of the rape-murder case at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital said about the 'Nabanna Abhiyan' rally, "I stand in support of the students who are protesting for my daughter. I am very proud that the students took so much risk and are protesting for my daughter today. They should intensify their protest and keep demanding justice."
  • At the same time, a female protester said, "Why did the police beat us? We did not break any law. We are holding a peaceful rally to demand justice for the doctor (deceased). Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should take responsibility and resign."
  • Fierce clashes broke out between police and protesters at the Hastings, Mahatma Gandhi Road, and Strand Road entry points of Howrah Bridge in Kolkata as well as Foreshore Road, Howrah Maidan, Kona Expressway, and Santragachhi station premises in Howrah. Protesters near Babughat Riverfront vandalized several police vehicles and set a police two-wheeler on fire.
  • Talking about the investigation of this case, the CBI has sought permission from a Kolkata court to conduct a polygraph test of the city's Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police (ASI) Anup Dutta. Dutta is said to be close to Sanjay Roy, the accused arrested in this case.
  • Officials said the CBI is investigating whether Dutta helped Roy in hiding the crime. According to reports, Dutta had allegedly played a key role in providing various benefits to Roy, they said. They said the CBI is trying to find out whether Roy had told Dutta about the crime and whether he had received any help.
