Stones were pelted on the survey team.
The survey team was surrounded by people from the other side along with the police and then stone pelting started. After this incident, the situation became tense and the police reached the spot and tried to control the crowd. Tear gas shells were fired to control the situation.
Why is the survey being conducted?
This survey was done a few days after advocate Vishnu Shankar Jain filed a petition in the court of Civil Judge of Sambhal, claiming that Shahi Jama Masjid stands on the site of a temple. The Hindu side claims that Shahi Jama Masjid is Harihar Temple. In this regard, the survey work has been done since 7:30 am on Sunday.
The court has ordered a survey.
Meanwhile, a crowd started gathering outside the mosque and a ruckus started in protest against the survey. The officials did try to pacify the crowd but some people started pelting stones targeting the police team. The court had ordered the survey after the Hindu side claimed Jama Masjid as Harihar temple in the court.
The survey was conducted in the mosque on the night of 19 November and the team reached the mosque again on Sunday to conduct the survey. The mosque committee has also given its consent for this survey and the mosque is being surveyed in the presence of both the parties.
