BJP's Maharashtra unit president Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Saturday announced that the new Mahayuti government will be sworn in on December 5 evening at Azad Maidan in south Mumbai in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Though the name of the chief minister has not been announced yet, BJP sources said Devendra Fadnavis is the front-runner. Fadnavis has been the chief minister twice and was the deputy chief minister in the previous Eknath Shinde-led government.
What were the results ofthe Maharashtra Assembly elections?
In the assembly elections held on November 20 in Maharashtra, the alliance of BJP, Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena, and Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) retained power by winning 230 out of 288 seats. BJP emerged as the largest party by winning 132 seats, while Shiv Sena won 57 and NCP won 41 seats.
At the same time, the Congress-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) has suffered a major setback in the elections. Congress performed its worst in the state assembly elections and won only 16 seats. Sharad Pawar's NCP (SP) won only 10 seats, while Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena (UBT) won 20 seats.
